In a Metro Classic opener at Madrigrano Gymnasium, the host Lancers were unable to keep up with the Spartans, who improved to 3-0 and were ranked No. 2 in Division-3 in the latest WisSports.net state coaches poll.
Tim Berry hit a pair of 3-pointers and led St. Joseph (1-2 overall) with 15 points, Andrew Alia scored 14 and Matt Schulte added eight. The Lancers shot 20-30 from the free-throw line, but that wasn't enough to stay with Martin Luther.
"Our coaching staff all agreed that our players showed good character at different points of the game," St. Joseph first-year coach Brandon Morris said. "The challenge will always be figuring out how to play 'Lancer Basketball' for 36 full minutes.
"We will look at film and find ways to grow and get better from this game. We are extremely fortunate to have the players we have, because our players are very resilient."
