SJCA 51, Saint Thomas More 45
The Lancers came out with great energy on Friday night as they opened their conference slate with Saint Thomas More. St. Joseph built a 19-0 lead to start the game, but Thomas More responded quickly by cutting the deficit to just four points by halftime.
In the second half, there were several lead changes and, at one point, Saint Thomas More lead by three points. Head coach Jason Coker stated, "That was the biggest moment for us so far this season. We were up, we were down and now what? Whose was going to step up for us?"
SJCA closed out the game with big efforts from Katie Matrise and Alexis Mattox, who made some critical baskets and free throws in the closing minutes.
"The biggest take away was our defensive effort, which was critical to getting this win. We had starters in foul trouble, which meant our entire bench had to step up and they did. This game says a lot about this group of girls with a new coach, new system, being up, being down and finding a way to get it done, said Coker.
The SJCA girls basketball program will take on Martin Luther at home on Tuesday, December 4th. The girls JV game will start at 4:15 PM and Varsity will start at 5:30 PM.
