A big defensive stand was needed Friday night if the St. Joseph girls basketball team hoped to get new head coach Jason Coker his first varsity victory.

And that's just what happened.

Visiting HOPE Christian had the last possession of the game, but the Lancers' defense rotated at just the right time to secure a 39-38 non-conference victory.

"The girls should be very proud of their effort, but they understand we have a lot of work to do in the lab these next two weeks as we prepare for our first conference game," Coker said.

Katie Matrise led St. Joseph (1-1) with 13 points, including three 3-pointers, followed by Elizabeth Alia with nine.
