St. Joe’s defeated Racine St. Cat’s 5-2 in a match played at Pritchard Park in Racine.  St. Joe’s sophomore Stella M started the scoring with her first goal of the season 7 minutes in off a Martina H cross.  Martina found the net in the 15th minute assisted by senior Jayden H.  Martina struck again in the 23rd minute, this time assisted by junior Katie L.  Sophomore Ava R took matters in her own hands just before half with a 30-yard unassisted blast to give the Lancers a 4-0 halftime lead.

The second half saw the Lancers with multiple opportunities to blow the match wide open, but the Angels by way of junior Arianna J scored in the 58th and 66th minutes to cut the lead in half.  The Lancers duo of Martina and Ava created some breathing room with Ava scoring off a Martina assist to give the Lancers the 5-2 lead which held until the final whistle.

St. Joe’s finished with 39 shots (17 on goal), compared to 9 (6 on goal) for St. Cat’s. The Lancers had 8 corners v. 3 for the Angels.

Coach Gino Alia: “The final score didn’t reflect our level of dominance. We created a ton of opportunities but struggled to finish. When that happens, and you have a few misplayed balls, all of a sudden St. Cat’s has confidence and momentum.  To the girls’ credit, they remained composed and worked together defensively to secure the win.”

In addition to the players mentioned above, other leading players for the Lancers included Katelyn V and Ally P.  The Lancers improved to 3-0, 2-0 in MCC. The Lancers travel to defending state champion Brookfield Academy Monday 4/11 for a rematch of last year’s sectional final.

Statistical leaders: Martina (2 goals; 2 assists), Ava (2 goals), Stella (1 goal), Jayden (1 assist)
